COACHES RESOURCES

OVERVIEW

Coaching youth sports presents many challenges. Coaches are looked upon to not only teach the game, but to also be role models, whilst all too often under the scrutiny of some very opinionated parents. Youth coaches take on the responsibility of developing the players, but they also take on the responsibility of continuing their own personal development.

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops” – Henry Adams

Keep this in mind as you read through coaching materials and remember sometimes you are also a student.

COACHING PREREQUISITES

Important to note that anyone whishing to be involved with minor hockey teams have complete two prerequisites. The first having enrolled and completed the Respect in Sport on-line course.

The second one will be to have a police background check completed in person at the LMHF office once you have officially been approved. Lakeshore Minor Hockey has a very strict policy for background checks of all its volunteers. All coaches, assistant coaches, managers and team personnel are required to fill in a police background verification form. Everyone must complete a Lakeshore Hockey verification form.

COACHING CERTIFICATION

LMHF is under the governance of Hockey Quebec and therefore must comply to its coach’s certification requirements. Information about which certification is required depending on the level to coach can be found on the Hockey Quebec Education website.

To view personal coaching profile, create a coaching profile or register for a clinic go to Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) website. For information or help, consult the Online guide for HCR

LMHF reimburses some of the certification fees but only in instances were coaches have been officially approved by LMHF. Persons wishing to register as a personal learning without official appointment may do so but there is no implicit agreement from LMHF reimbursed fees incurred or being approved to coach with LMHF.

The reimbursement policy is subject to change at anytime so please consult this page or validate with VP of Hockey if necessary.

COACHES SELECTION

Regardless of the level or category all coaches are qualified VOLUNTEERS.

Single Letter Coaches

  • Interested coaches need to provide their eHockey profile via Email preferably to division GM
  • The division GM and the VP Hockey select those interested coaches who are most qualified.
  • Single Letter coaches are usually parents and usually coach the team their child is on. Although if you are interested in coaching a team without having child in the team you are encouraged to submit your name to the VP of Hockey.

Double Letter Coaches

  • All interested candidates must submit an application to coach a specific posting.
  • Candidates are reviewed by a committee which includes Lakeshore’s independent Technical Coordinator, LMHF President and VP Hockey.
  • Candidates must also submit their eHockey profile, annual plan and their coaching philosophy.
  • The committee selects the most qualified candidate for that given level. Typically, preferential consideration is given to non-parent coaches all things being equal. This fosters a more unbiased environment.
